Instrument servant à mesurer indirectement les distances.
   Dans les écoles de tir, la stadia était une plaque de métal portant un évidement triangulaire au moyen duquel on mesurait la grandeur apparente d'un homme debout à une certaine distance ; la distance se déduisait de cette grandeur apparente. On a construit des lunettes à stadia fondées sur le même principe.
   En topographie, la stadia est une règle divisée qui se place verticalement en un point, dont on veut connaître la distance à un autre point où se trouve un observateur muni d'une lunette à réticule. La distance cherchée se déduit du nombre de divisions de la règle interceptées entre les fils du réticule.

   Le grec signifie, stade, d'après des auteurs anonymes (cette étymologie se trouve dans un manuel de tir lithographié) ; ou plutôt l'adjectif féminin en grec, du grec, planté debout.
