(o-va-sion ; en vers, de quatre syllabes) s. f.
1°   Espèce inférieure de triomphe, qui s'accordait à un général après une victoire peu considérable, ou remportée dans une guerre qui n'avait pas été déclarée suivant les lois ; dans l'ovation le triomphateur était à cheval, et non porté sur un char.

2°   Par extension, honneur rendu à une personne en lui faisant cortége, etc. Faire une ovation à quelqu'un.
•   Le vainqueur [pour un prix de peinture] élevé sur les épaules de ses camarades.... après avoir joui des honneurs de cette espèce d'ovation, il fut déposé à la pension, DIDER. Salon de 1767, Oeuvr. t. XV, p. 155.
   Lat. ovationem, de ovare, qui vient de ovis, brebis ; ainsi dit parce qu'on y immolait une brebis au lieu du taureau, qui était la victime dans le grand triomphe.
