Terme de chimie. Alcaloïde trouvé par Pelletier et Caventou dans les graines de la cévadille, veratrum sabadilla, L. et dans l'ellébore blanc, veratrum album, L.
   Vératre, et la finale ine, qui indique un principe alcalin ou basique.
