1°   Terme de musique. Qui a rapport à une tonalité.

2°   Particulièrement. Qui a rapport à la tonalité moderne. Une fugue tonale. Cet accord n'est pas tonal. Cette résolution est parfaitement tonale.
•   On en est venu aujourd'hui à se servir généralement du mot tonal pour désigner cette propriété inhérente aux degrés de notre musique d'avoir chacun un caractère particulier, SAUGEON et ANATOLE Lett. sur l'enseignement pop. de la mus. v.
