L'élève des vers à soie.
   Le grec signifie, ver à soie, proprement l'animal du pays des Sères. M. de Dumast et, après lui, MM., Luppi et Dupré de Loire ont condamné le mot sériciculture et ont démandé qu'on le remplaçât par sériculture. En effet, ce que l'on cultive ce n'est pas la soie, c'est le ver à soie. Sériciculture ne peut être considéré que comme un exemple d'une figure de mots où l'on prend le produit pour le produisant ; c'est ainsi qu'on dit viniculture, moins bien il est vrai que viticulture. De cela il résulte que sériculture est plus exact que sériciculture et mérite la préférence. Cependant il faut remarquer qu'à un autre point de vue, le point de vue grammatical, sériculture serait reprochable et qu'il faut alors supposer que le grec est latinisé.
