   Genre de rapaces où l'on distingue : le scops européen dit vulgairement petit duc et appelé tuget dans le Languedoc ; on le trouve en France, en Afrique, au Brésil et à la Guiane, LEGOARANT .
   Quant à la petite chevêche et aux scops, qui passent le jour dans les trous de vieux arbres et de rochers, ils en sortent le soir et vivent presque exclusivement d'insectes nocturnes, Monit. universel, 12 juin 1867, p. 727, 1re col..
   Du grec, espèce de chouette grimacière, du grec, se moquer.
