(ska-lè-n') adj.
   Terme de géométrie. Triangle scalène, triangle dont les trois côtés sont inégaux.
   Terme d'anatomie. Les muscles scalènes, ou, substantivement, les scalènes, muscles qui prennent leurs insertions aux apophyses transverses des vertèbres cervicales ; ainsi dits parce qu'on les a comparés à un triangle scalène. Le scalène antérieur, le scalène moyen, le scalène postérieur.
   XVIe s.
   Le muscle que nous avons dit mouvoir lateralement le col, qu'on appelle scalene, à cause de sa figure...., PARÉ IV, 17.
