(pré-gnan, gnan-t') adj.
1°   Terme didactique. Qui porte en soi un germe de reproduction, en parlant d'une femelle. J'ai six brebis, dont trois prégnantes.
2°   Par extension, violent, pressant, comme le besoin d'accoucher (emploi qui a vieilli).

   XVIe s.
•   Tous deux commencerent à donner ordre aux affaires, desquelles les plus pregnantes d'alors estoient celles d'Angleterre, CARLOIX II, 1.
   Lat. praegnantem, femme enceinte, de prae, indiquant le terme, et gnans, participe actif du radical dont gnatus est le participe passif (voy. génération). L'ancienne langue avait prains, preigne, venant du nominatif praegnans.
