mastic
(ma-stik) s. m.
1°   Résine qui découle d'incisions faites au térébinthe lentisque (terebinthus lentiscus, pistacia lentiscus, L.).
2°   Composition de cire, de résine et de poudre de briques dont on se sert pour différents usages. Le mastic des lapidaires. Joindre avec le mastic les dalles d'une terrasse.
3°   Mastic des vitriers, ou, simplement, mastic, composition de craie et d'huile de lin. On forme avec ce lut [composé de craie et d'huile de lin cuite] que les vitriers nomment mastic, un petit bourrelet que l'on met autour du carreau, et que l'on aplatit ensuite avec le doigt, Dict. des arts et mét. Vitrier.
•   Pour que le mastic soit bon et adhère bien au bois, il faut rendre l'huile siccative en la faisant bouillir sur de la litharge, dont elle dissout une petite portion, LEGOARANT .
4°   Espèce de thym qui exhale l'odeur du mastic.

•   Le sel est un mastic qui lie et mastique toutes choses, PALISSY 244.
   Provenç. mastic, mastec ; cat. masteg ; port. mastique ; ital. mastice, mastico ; du lat. mastix, mastiche ; le terme grec est un dérivé du verbe(grec) pétrir, mâcher.
