(li-tto-ral, ra-l') adj.
1°   Qui appartient aux bords de la mer. La partie littorale de la France.
   Oiseaux littoraux, oiseaux qui fréquentent particulièrement les côtes.
   Poissons littoraux, mollusques littoraux, poissons, mollusques qui vivent dans les eaux du bord de la mer. En ce sens, littoral est opposé à pélagien.
2°   S. m. L'ensemble des côtes d'un pays. Le littoral de la Baltique, de l'Adriatique, de la France.
   Lat. littoralis, de littus, rivage. On écrit aussi lítus ; suivant Curtius, ce mot se rattache au terme grec signifiant marais.
