(i-rri-ta-sion ; en vers, de cinq syllabes) s. f.
   État d'une personne irritée. Calmer l'irritation des esprits. Dans son irritation, il a prononcé des paroles compromettantes.
   Terme de médecine. Action de ce qui provoque une activité excessive dans une partie ; résultat de cette action. Un vésicatoire détermine une irritation très vive de la peau.
   XVIe s.
   Cette femme a quelque irritation contre moi ; pour se venger, elle me donne un dangereux chat par les pattes, preparée à accuser ce que je ferai, D'AUB. Hist. II, 411.
   Lat. irritationem, de irritare, irriter. On a dit que irritation était un mot nouveau proposé par Mercier ; il est, comme on voit, bien plus ancien.
