(in-to-na-sion ; en vers, de cinq syllabes) s. f.
1°   Terme de musique. Manière d'observer les tons, et, en particulier, action par laquelle on commence à entonner quelque air de chant.
•   J'entendis un mousse chanter le commencement du septième chant de la Jérusalem ; l'air était une espèce de récitatif très élevé dans l'intonation, et descendant aux notes les plus graves à la chute du vers, CHATEAUB. Itin. 1re part. Voyage de la Grèce..
2°   En parlant du plain-chant, l'action de mettre un chant sur le ton dans lequel il doit être. L'intonation de ce psaume est de tel ton.
3°   Par extension, divers tons que l'on prend en parlant ou en lisant.
•   S'il n'est pas possible de trouver, dans la proportion harmonique, des subdivisions capables d'exprimer les intonations d'une langue telle que la chinoise, qui nous paraît très chantante, où trouverait-on des subdivisions pour une langue presque monotone comme la nôtre ?, DUCLOS Mém. act. théâtr. 4°   Terme militaire. Mode différent dans le ton, suivant lequel le commandement se fait dans chaque arme. L'intonation dans l'infanterie, dans l'artillerie.
   XVIe s.
•   Tous les autres moutons, crians et bellans en pareille intonation, commencearent soy jeter et sauter en mer aprez à la file, RABEL. Pant. IV, 7.
