1°   Qui est au commencement. La marche initiale du phénomène.
   Terme de mécanique. Vitesse initiale d'un boulet, celle de ce projectile pendant le temps que, au sortir de la pièce, il parcourt une ligne sensiblement droite.
•   Le temps pendant lequel il [le mobile] aura agi sera proportionnel à cette vitesse initiale, VOLT. Newt. I, 10.
2°   Terme de calligraphie et d'imprimerie. Lettre initiale, celle qui commence un nom propre, un chapitre, une période : elle doit toujours être majuscule.
   S. f. Une initiale, une lettre initiale. Il n'a signé ce billet que de l'initiale de son nom, que de son initiale.
3°   Terme de grammaire. Particule initiale, particule ou préposition mise devant les radicaux pour en modifier la valeur.
   Au pluriel, des grammairiens ont voulu dire initials ; mais rien n'empêche de dire initiaux : Les mouvements initiaux de ces divers projectiles.
   Lat. initialis, de initium, commencement, de in.... 2, et ire, aller : aller en, dans. Au XIVe siècle, on a dit iniciant : S'aulcun estoit present [au début d'une pleurésie] et que Dieu luy eust donné telle grace de congnoistre tel commencement iniciant. BERNARD DE GORDON, Traduction, IV, 4.
