(gon-fa-lo-nié ; l'r ne se lie jamais ; au pluriel, l's se lie : les gon-fa-lo-nié-z et....) s. m.
1°   Celui qui porte le gonfalon.
   Officier qui porte, à Rome, l'étendard de l'Église.
   Gonfalonier de l'Église, nom donné aux protecteurs établis par les papes dans les villes d'Italie, pendant leur lutte contre les empereurs.
•   Un paysan nommé Jocomuzio, qui se fit soldat, et qui changea son nom en celui de Sforza, devint favori de la reine, connétable de Naples, gonfalonier de l'Église, VOLT. Moeurs, 74.
2°   Titre du chef de plusieurs républiques de l'Italie.
•   Sa réputation [de Cosme de Médicis] valut à ses descendants la principale autorité dans la Toscane ; son fils l'administra sous le nom de gonfalonier, VOLT. Moeurs, 105.
   On dit aussi gonfanonier.
