Gog et Magog, le plus souvent réunis dans la Bible ; dans Ézéchiel, XXXVIII et XXXIX, ils apparaissent tous les deux, mais Gog y est le nom d'un prince païen du Nord qui, à la tête d'une cavalerie redoutable, attaquera la Terre sainte et sera entièrement détruit par Jéhovah ; dans l'Apocalypse, XX, 8, après le règne de mille ans, Gog et Magog marcheront contre la ville sainte, mais seront anéantis par le feu du ciel.

ÉTYMOLOGIE

D'après le Bibel-Lexicon de Schenkel, 1869-1875, Leipzig, l'étymologie la plus probable rattache gog au persan koh, montagne ; en sorte que magog signifierait grand gog (hautes montagnes ou haut plateau), du sanscrit maha, grand. Il semble donc que gog et magog étaient un nom collectif des barbares du Nord.
