   L'étang reflétait comme un miroir le ciel sans nuage, sauf sur un seul point où les châtaignes d'eau, qu'on nomme cornouelles dans le pays, étalaient leur réseau rougeâtre, TH. BENTZON Rev. des Deux-Mondes, 1er juin 1876, p. 551.
   Corne, à cause des épines ou cornes du fruit qui l'ont fait comparer à une châtaigne en son enveloppe.
