(ouigh) s. m. et f.
1°   Celui, celle qui, en Angleterre, appartient au parti faisant profession de défendre la liberté. Un whig. Une whig. Les whigs sont opposés aux torys.
•   Souvent, pour empêcher une pièce nouvelle de paraître, pour la faire tomber.... on emploie plus d'intrigues que les whigs n'en ont tramé contre les torys, VOLT. Lett. Albergati, 23 déc. 1760.
   Adj. L'opinion whig. Le parti whig. Les ministères whigs.
2°   Aux États-Unis, on appelle whig ou fédéraliste le parti opposé à celui des démocrates.
   Ce nom, dont on ignore l'origine, fut d'abord donné à quelques sectaires de l'ouest de l'Écosse, qui s'assemblaient dans les champs et qui ne buvaient presque pas d'autre liqueur que du lait aigre ; ensuite il s'est étendu à ceux qui ne reconnaissaient pas l'Église anglicane ; plus tard il devint le nom du parti contraire aux jacobites.
