   Bill d'indemnité, expression qui, du parlement anglais, est venue dans le langage parlementaire, et se dit de l'absolution que la chambre donne à un ministre pour quelque chose d'irrégulier, il est vrai, mais commandé par les circonstances.
   Angl. bill, anciennement bille. Le bas-lat. billa, cédule, mémoire, contrat, n'est que le mot anglais latinisé. Bill ou bille, n'ayant de relations avec aucun mot germanique, est une altération de bulle, bulla, qui veut dire aussi cédule, rescrit (voy. bulle), comme le prouvent billette et bullete qui avaient le sens de rescrit ; la confusion entre bille et bulle est évidente. Il y a eu peut-être aussi d'autres confusions : à l'article billot, on verra que ce mot a été dit pour pancarte, et cela parce que la pancarte était fixée à un pieu, à un billot ; faudrait-il penser que, de la même façon, bille, pièce de bois (voy. bille 2) a influé sur l'assimilation entre bille et bulle ? Quoi qu'il en soit, bill est un mot d'origine française.
