(a-mèn') s. m.
1°   Mot hébraïque usité dans les prières de l'Église, et signifiant : Ainsi soit-il.
•   Le prélat fait l'action de grâce ; l'assistant répond amen, CHATEAUB. Génie, t. I, I, 8.
•   Les élus auront un autre nom et un amen bienheureux, BOSSUET Hist. II, 4.
2°   Il sert à exprimer le consentement. Amen, soit. Il dit amen à tout, il ne fait aucune objection.
•   J'ai été ravie que vous ayez dit amen sur toutes les bagatelles que je vous mandais, SÉV. 530.
3°   Familièrement. La fin d'une chose. Il m'a tout dit jusqu'à amen.
   De pater à amen, du commencement à la fin.
   XIIIe s.
•   L'oroison dist apertement Tybert et le per omnia, Devant l'autel s'agenoilla, Et Renart respondi amen ; Puis li a dit : levez vos en, Et si alez fermer ces huis, Je dirai benedicamus, Ren. 21369.
   XVIe s.
•   Il ne faut pas prendre cela comme l'opinion d'un seul homme, car tous disent amen après lui, CALV. Instit. 65.
•   Toutes les promesses de Dieu sont Oui et Amen en Jesus Christ, CALV. ib. 320.
•   Tant qu'il y a de promesses de Dieu, elles sont en lui Oui et Amen : c'est-à-dire ratifiées, CALV. ib. 448.
