(kan-sèl et chan-sèl) s. m.
1°   Dans une église, l'endroit du choeur voisin du maître autel, et ordinairement fermé d'une balustrade, et où se mettent les ministres servant à l'autel. Mot vieilli.
2°   Le lieu où était déposé le sceau de l'État et qui était entouré d'une balustrade.

   XVIe s.
